Georges Duroy, jeune homme de province arrivé á Paris, veut faire fortune et vite. Pour cela, il est prét á tout. Intelligent et séducteur, il s'entoure de femmes influentes qui l'aident dans son ascension sociale. Bel-Ami, car c'est ainsi qu'on l'appelle, fait son chemin á force de conquétes amoureuses sur fond de corruptions politiques et financiéres. Á travers le parcours de Bel-Ami, Maupassant fait la critique de la société des années 1880.

Az ELI könnyített olvasmányok általános jellemzői: több sorozat, más-más beosztással: A legfiatalabbaknak szóló olvasmányok 4 szintre vannak osztva, a tizenéveseknek szólók 3, a fiatal felnőttek számára készítettek pedig 6 szintre osztottak. Mindenhol megadtuk a hozzávetőleges nyelvtudási szintet (A1, A2 stb.), de a headwordök száma talán jobb eligazítást nyújt.

Az olvasmányok színesek, minőségi papírra vanna nyomva, és szín- és képi világok, valamint világképük, cselekményvezetésük összetettsége megfelel a megcélzott korosztálynak. A nyelvtanulásba felnőtt fejjel belevágó diák a legalacsonyabb szinten így kicsik számára élvezetes olvasmányokat talál, saját érdeklődéséhez közelítő szövegeket inkább a 6 szintre osztott fiatal felnőtt sorozat alsó szintjein találhat; no persze ez sem Thomas Mann-i / prousti, vonneguti szint. Vegyük úgy, hogy ez nem más, mint nosztalgiaút tizenéveinkbe.
